Field Marshal KM Cariappa Memorial Seminar Held in Lucknow

Lucknow – The Field Marshal KM Cariappa Memorial Seminar was organised at the Headquarters of the Indian Army’s Central Command. The seminar, themed “Modernisation of Infantry Soldiers for Contemporary and Future Wars”, was jointly conducted by the Directorate of Infantry and the Centre for Land Warfare Studies (CLAWS).

The event paid tribute to Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa, the first Commander-in-Chief of independent India, and focused on preparing the infantry for emerging battlefield challenges such as hybrid warfare, drone combat, cyber conflicts, and multi-domain operations.

The seminar was inaugurated by Lt Gen Ajay Kumar, Director General of Infantry, who highlighted the institutional roadmap for infantry modernisation. Delivering the keynote address, Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta, GOC-in-C Central Command, stressed that modernisation of infantry is both essential and inevitable. He underlined the need for agile, adaptable, and technology-driven soldiers to meet evolving threats.

The seminar featured four major sessions:

Maj Gen Vivek Sahgal (Retd) on “Contemporary and Future Battlefields”
Maj Gen Pankaj Saxena (Retd) on “UAS and Counter-UAS: Changing Battlefield Paradigms”
Lt Gen D.P. Pandey (Retd) on “Infantry Modernisation: From Foot Soldier to Modern Soldier”
Maj Gen Sanjeev Kumar Sengar (Retd) on “Indian Defence Ecosystem and Integration of Niche Technologies”

The discussions emphasised realistic training, indigenous innovations, and the incorporation of self-reliant support systems to enhance the capabilities of Indian infantry in the face of future warfare.
